The plant engineering is the second but major pillar of Niersberger. It includes both the installation and construction of facilities, the provision of expert know-how in the procedural plant engineering as well as the renewable energy technology and environmental engineering.

Concept: regaining of ressources
The main concept of Niersberger plants is the generation of energy by applying renewable energy technologies and systems of environmental engineering. We do that out of a very special reason: As plants are producing energy they simoultaneously regain secondary, but valuable and marketable byproducts while executing their transformation process – e. g. organic fertilizer or crude oil. This concept is commonly discribed as the regaining of ressources. The concept is carried by a well-known idea: sustainability.

Procedural plant engineering Process of energy production

Procedural plant engineering deals with plants, which have the primary function of generating power. Thereby, the processes of the energy production are important. This can occur using raw materials or other resources.

Recovery of resources
Niersberger places a high degree of importance on sustainability for this process. It describes the process path, which focuses on the ecologically meaningful recovery of resources. Against this background, waste products can also be used for procedural plants. They act as resources that generate energy. Another aspect of usage: The process transforms this waste product into a marketable product. The real recovery of resources takes place in this step. Because: If there is a market for this product, then the model will pay off fully. A cycle that pays off double!

The process is dominating
Procedural engineered plants are highly complex. Niersberger specializes in this area of regenerative energy technology and environmental engineering. The process is the decisive factor here. It dominates the entire design and construction phase. Only when this has been defined precisely, will Niersberger begin with the design or the construction of a customized facility that perfectly corresponds to your process.

Renewable energy technology

That Niersberger has become active as a classic installation company in the market segment of renewable energy technology, is obvious. The basic expertise is available. Only a transformation of this basic knowledge had to be conducted in order to ultimately be successful in this innovative segment.

Finite nature of fossil fuels
In this business area, Niersberger focuses on photovoltaics and the waste fermentation as well as the production of biogas. The reason: The finite nature of fossil fuels. Even nuclear fuels such as uranium are not available in endless amounts. On the contrary: in 60 years, the global uranium deposits should be used up. The situation with fossil fuels is even more volatile. In approximately 40 years the supplies of fossil fuels, such as petroleum, will start to deplete. That’s what the International Energy Agency IEA is saying. In about 8 years, according to the IEA experts, the global peak of oil production will already have been reached. Afterwards, alternative energy sources will need to cover more and more of the emerged gaps. In the Federal Republic of Germany alone, approximately 20% of the total energy requirement is provided by renewable energy sources. By 2020 it is predicted to even be 30%, and by 2030 up to 40%.

Waste fermentation

Since 2004 biogas plants from Niersberger have been producing biogas from organic waste (liquid manure, manure, sewage sludge), organic waste and plant material (corn, grass, sugar beets etc.), and converting it into electrical energy and heat.

In the particular case of organic waste, biogas is attained in a so-called waste fermentation plant. A technical step, which reduces odor emissions and allows for the proper recycling of bio-waste. The digestate is processed further as fertilizer. A closed and above all sustainable cycle that leaves no traces.

Thus, the Niersberger Group received a major order for the construction of a complete biogas plant from E.ON in 2008. This was the largest biogas project to date, with a total volume of EUR 10 million.

Approaches for regenerative energy technology
This is the basis for a logical starting point for the use of renewable energy technology. Here, Niersberger designs custom solutions, based on concrete and realistic requirements. This conceptual spirit pervades the entire development phase, continues into the implementation and finally has its finale in the installation and commissioning. Thereby, each facility is different. Because each installation meets the customer’s specific requirements and is based on an individual approach.

Service and maintenance

With a total of over 1,000 maintenance contracts, the service and maintenance department plays an important operational role in the Niersberger Group. Several companies of the group handle the maintenance and servicing of various plants in Germany and throughout Europe.

Regular maintenance
Regular inspections and regular maintenance are important for the smooth operation of a plant. Compliance with the maintenance intervals, for example, protects the operator from warranty failures and guarantees a long life of the facility. Remote maintenance through telemetry

The maintenance of renewable energy technology systems requires in-depth knowledge about the technology and the system itself. This is why, for example, the environment in which a biogas plant or a photovoltaic system is installed plays an important role. Environmental factors are critical to the operation and have a large impact on the flawless functionality. Is the facility located in the mountains, by the sea, in dry or damp area? What is the climate, what is the temperature?
